April Is Financial Literacy Month
Empowering the Next Generation: Why Financial Literacy Month Matters
April marks the start of Financial Literacy Month, a nationally recognized movement to promote and support financial understanding in children and teens. It's the perfect time to jump-start conversations about money with your kids, and these kids are ready to learn! With almost 74% of teens wanting to learn about finances and 86% eager to understand investing, the desire for financial education is higher than ever among young people.1 Women are often the financial decision-makers in households and can empower the next generation with the knowledge and tools to succeed. So, let’s take the opportunity to teach them what we know!
Teens Tune In
Every parent has questioned if their child is actually paying attention. But rest assured, our children and grandchildren are listening. In fact, 75% of teens in America identify their parents as their most trusted source of financial education. In other words, our youngest savers and investors are looking to us for their financial education.1 So, if you’re not having open discussions about money, now’s the time to start.
How to Start the Conversation
It all begins with a frank conversation about finances. By demonstrating your openness to discussing what many consider a "taboo" topic, you're also modeling how to approach finances for your young learner. The more you can normalize these discussions, the more comfortable your children will feel about approaching financial topics as they get older.
A Brighter Future for Our Kids
Financial literacy month has been shown to have a lasting, positive impact on our future investors. Children who learn money management early are more likely to secure lower-cost loans and grants for college and less likely to rely on private loans or high-interest credit cards.2 Financial literacy is the gift that keeps on giving.
If you decide to put your "teacher" hat on this month, let us know! We're always happy to help educate and support our future generations.
